Yes, just like everything else it requires an updating process. This is
where active relationship building keeps RIM/IG in the loop. In my
experience most organizational changes are announced through organizational
news bulletins. Make it a point to update this information as soon as
possible. I have spent considerable time sorting this out for boxes that
had been in storage for a long time and it was difficult to pinpoint the
owner for some of the boxes/records - even the current functional areas
didn't recognize the contents:) In that case RIM became the owner by
default just to have a contact point and disposition decisions were made
jointly with legal, tax, audit etc.
Makes you realize that a RIM program is so much more than a Records
Retention Schedule. RIM provides a broad range of services to the
organization and requires a manager who recognizes and is able to develop
and implement these services and products as needed to their organization.
