Hi Chris,
Do ya have a 100MB ZIP drive? 8" floppy? LS-120 Superfloppy? Commodore
Datassette? :)
I think Dan's point was that the problem with electronic information
archival and retrieval is not so much a media problem as it is a reader
problem, and especially a software problem. I do a presentation on digital
preservation pretty regularly and I always ask the audience if they have
stuff on: DVD, CD, 3.5", ZIP, 5.25", 8", WORM, and finally the Commodore
VIC-21/64/128 Datasette media. Then I ask how many of them have readers, and
finally how many of them have working readers AND a machine to attach them
to (for the really old stuff). A lot of eyes get really big in the room.
Doesn't matter if the CDs are perfect if there's no way to read them.
My .02 on a gorgeous Colorado Monday,
Jesse Wilkins
