Hmm - Could be trouble for me, as I was born in that (PG) County.

Ah - but in Maryland birth, at least in more modern days, are registered
with the State, so I think I'll be OK. Those records are probably in
Annapolis or Baltimore. However, since PG county was founded in 1696,
there could be some problems going back in history for some records. Hope
my dad has a copy of the deed to his house!

A quote from one of the Fire/EMS Spokespersons this morning, "This building
holds a lot of memories - both good and bad for a lot of people." He noted
that he had gotten his marriage license in the building some 25 years ago.

In the past courthouse fires were common, and many records collections have
gaps because of them. Some fires were accidental, some not so accidental
(it was a good way to get rid of pesky ownership records in the 18th and
19th centuries). I remember my grandmother having to take a more elderly
relative with her to apply for social security. The woman was present when
my grandmother was born and had to "swear witness" to her identity and date
of birth, because the courthouse containing my grandmother's birth records
had burned in the 1920's.
