don't know about lawsuits, but you do have various federal regulations
concerning maintaining confidentiality of information. Take a look at the recent FTC
rule that someone posted earlier. It covers the Disposal of Consumer
Information

Also take a look at the various RAIN postings. What you will find after doing
your research is that although shredding or secure destruction may not be
required by law or regulation it is considered to be a best practice, and
something that the "prudent man" would do. (see Hugh I've been listening to you)
