We have recently introduced a form for capturing information about databases
and any other electronic recordkeeping systems. We found the form necessary
in order to communicate with IT people in a meaningful way. The normal
scheduling techniques for paper-based records just did not seem to really
work with e-records, despite the contention by many that scheduling is best
done independently of format. We found it necessary to appraise the records
considering their context and relationships to other data, and could only
describe these in the context of the overall system. Our form was developed
from the ones used by the National Archives. It is available on our website.
