Below are some facts and figures from the interviews given by the head of
Russian Federal Archival Agency (Rosarchiv) Vladimir Kozlov (published
September 21, 2004) and his deputy Andrey Artizov (published November 26,
2004 and December 4, 2004), and from Rosarchiv’s website:



-         On average, Russian archivists are 60 years old;



-         Declassification work continues. About 8 million files were
declassified during last 10 years.


-         Federal archives have no free space; they urgently need at least
10,000 sq. m. of storage facilities.



-         During last 4 years, 4,000 computerized workplaces were created in
Russian archives (total number of employed is approximately 16,000)



-         Registered national archival assets consist of 460 million of
storage units. Most precious part consist of 39 million storage units in 14
Federal archives. Two hundred archives of the subjects of Russian Federation
hold 123 million storage units (including 9 million units belonging to the
city of Moscow); and more than 30 million storage units are in 2,500
archives of local governments. Archives of the Russian Academy of Science
hold 2.5 million units, and museums and libraries keep another 7 million
units.
            State and local government archives hold 213 million files of
paper records (4% are classified); 190 million of them were selected for
permanent retention. Another 100 million files are kept in the archives of
government agencies and public organizations.



-         Annual production of paper records in Russia is 400 billion pages.
Approximately 3% of them go to archives. Annually 1.6 million storage units
are acquired by state and local government archives.
