For those of us who can't get to France to see the paintings in person,
France has a very nice sytem of websites in place. My husband has been
using this website for the Lascaux caves as the first big assignment for his
world history students for years:

  http://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/arcnat/lascaux/en/

There are sections discussing the deterioration Peter mentions, the closing
of the caves in 1963, and the construction of the replica site. France has
also provided websites for a number of other cave locations.

Cheers,
Laura Hensey
