And that's the Republic of Texas to you son! The other 49 were just
territories & such like.

I believe that Hawaii was a Kingdom
A lot of Alaska was under some sort of Russian Status
The Southwest had a different status for a while
Louisiana remains a model unto itself

I can't help but wonder, if we asked very nicely, whether Mexico would
take Texas back if only for a little while :)
