Since this seems to be a popular topic, I will chime in:
In Spokane we have a "Waste to energy plant" where the majority of
municiple waste is burned. They provide a service called "Secured Burn"
where records can be loaded directly into a large bucket that is then
dumped directly into the burning chamber. The fee for the service is
comparable to shredding (by design I suspect).

To add some context: our East coast offices use shredding or shredding
services because there is a significant value for the shredded material in
recycling applications. Here on the West coast, there is a lot of waste
from the lumber industry that is used in paper making and related industry.
So, the value of shredded paper is not always sufficient to justify
shredding over burning.

I thought this might interest some, since I haven't seen any mention of
regional economic differences in determining optimal disposition methods.
