I agree to some extent with LarryM, however I will say that the
introduction of the mainframe computer into the business world
resulted in the eventual negation of records management as a business
tool. I've always believed that records managers and the profession as
a whole failed to realize the impact that computers would have on our
profession and the world.

(How many folks remember seeing retention schedules that addressed the
retention of tab cards?)

RM's failure to directly address electronic records from  the
beginning is why we are where we are today. Preservation of e-records
is but part of the whole problem.
