There are some photographic options you might want to consider exploring. 
Organizations who generate microfilm are able to use high-conrast 
photographic techniques to generate 35mm black and white images (negatives) 
from ledgers, papers, books of varying sizes that can be used as an 
intermediary to produce a plain paper print from that you can scan.
