Hi Helen
I found a lack of Information v Library courses when I studied a few years
ago; however my uni was quite helpful in letting me follow courses of
interest/value that were related to my studies and I now have a hybrid
qualification. The requirement from my uni was of course I provide
background info and discuss my requirements with the other institution
concerned so I could provide a 'seamless interface' prior to agreement to
branch out. I believe most tutors have the students best interests at heart
so perhaps you could discuss alternative units of study for you with them;
the worst they can do is say no. Yes there were overlaps and it did get a
tad boring at times but I think the 'no pain, no gain' rule applies here, so
keep your end objective in sight and keep smiling.

Being in my final semester of a MLIM course in Australia I must agree
that massive boredom is unfortunately what does happen, and I have ended
up working in RM.

Univeristies are cutting back on electives and as a result everyone
gets to do the same thing with very little variation or scope for
personal interest. While this makes monetary sense for the university I
fear that all it is doing is churning out graduates who are clones of
each other with the same knowledge and this cannot be good for the
industry and more people will turn to RM (not that thats a bad thing :)
)

Cheers

Helena
