There are at least two alpha/numeric fonts that were specifically designed
for OCR capture, OCR-A and OCR-B.  Together with the MICR version of E-13B,
the fonts are used primarily in financial services.  Neither of the fonts is
very suitable for general use.  If you are trying to capture data from
forms, these fonts will work.  However, if you are looking for a general
purpose font that can be used for letters, reports and the like, a serif'd
font like Times New Roman is a better choice.
