The discussion, in part, reflects regional views on role delineation. For
myself, I do not see that a sharp line should be drawn between the roles of
archivist and RMgr and believe that collaboration is key to ensuring that
(a) information resources effectively serve the organization and are
efficiently managed while doing so and (b) that records of long term,
historical value are identifiable and duly appraised so that appropriate
decisions can be made to preserve them for archival retention. Those
decisions should not wait until after the records have served there
purposes (for example, early identification of archival records may guide
decisions as to the media for storage, preservation activities early in the
record life). It's about partnership.
