We are in the process of defining system specifications for a new
CM/DM/RM system.  I am trying to see the difference between Basic search
and Advanced search capabilities?  Does anyone have a definition for
these two capabilities?


Laura.  As I see it within our EDRMS, a basic search is used 95% of the 
time and is generally searching for a word or a phrase.  It may include 
the words "and". "or", "not" or "within".  It may include a '"fuzzy" 
search.  For example with the fuzzy search on and the search is for the 
word "Garratt".  It may pull up Jarratt or Barrett or Farrett.  To cut 
down on the number of hits you may search on "Garratt" but not "Jarratt" 
or "Barrett" or "Farrett".  This would bring up Garratt documents only.

The advanced search may be across the object name, fields, within folder, 
sticky notes, creation date, modification date, number of pages or 
relationship (find the children, not the parent).  This can be useful in 
that it may include a combination of the above and boolean searches.  The 
advanced search syntax can be used to refine search results, when too many 
documents are returned as search hits.
