This is a most interesting discussion and a logical one since there is a
special legal list. But some input from the RIM list is also in order. Of
course, legal is unique but so are other general business operations. There are key
elements in our field, whether it be legal, government, industry, and the
like. The first is a thorough understanding of RIM and its various elements,
their requirements, applications, and technologies. The second is adaptability.
Look at all the different IAS groups. Each has an ingredient of uniqueness.
Major corporations have large legal departments and usually include interface
with outside law firms. There are many cases where records managers have
worked in the legal and business environment as well. There are others that made
their entry into the field through legal organizations. Uniqueness is not a
barrier to any well trained records manager.

Remember the lyrics in a great musical. You have to know the territory
regardless of your skills.
