While we are on the subject of political correctness maybe one of the
more enlightened in this esteemed crowd can explain the following to me:

The University of North Dakota adopted the name of the "Fighting Sioux"
in honor of the Sioux Nation which was publicly acknowledged by many in
the military (domestic and foreign) as the finest light cavalry in the
world.  The president of the college was adopted by the local Sioux
tribe for bestowing such an honor on them.

On the other hand, the University of Norte Dame is known by the name
"The Fighting Irish".  Fighting Irish is a throwback from the potato
famine migration of the 1850's when the Irish when generally thought to
be made up of 25% thugs, 25% policeman, and 50% railroad laborers, 100%
of which were always spoiling for a fight.

Now, here are my questions:  

1. Which of the names is more politically incorrect?

2. Which of the two names was more derogatory in its origins?

3. The NCAA is requiring which institution to change its name?

4. Does the logical answer mean that the NCAA is racist against the
Irish?

Political correctness has just about as much to do with reason as IT has
to do with records.

Based on that, this evening I am going to celebrate Canada Day and the
4th of July with a large Oriental salad topped with French dressing and
washed down by a black Russian.
