The NCAA tried to make the FSU Seminoles change their name too - until
the Seminole Tribe of Florida heard of the plan and did everything they
could to stop it. The Seminoles have since been dropped from the NCAA's
list of offensive mascots (click here for the NCAA press release
http://seminoles.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/082305aac.html ).
The school has the support and blessing of their namesakes. I always
found it interesting to watch the handful of protestors at FSU home
games, protesting on behalf of people who aren't offended.

And as for the Irish, I always understood the ND "Fighting Irish" came
to be because the school was founded in response to (spite of) the Irish
Americans being discriminated against in the Ivy League schools. So in
response they rallied and fought to start their own college and ended up
creating one of the most respected institutions of higher learning in
the country.

I went to school at San Diego State right out of high school - but never
saw any Aztec protestors there ... Oh, wait, that's because I went to
school there before Marshall Faulk did - so no one even knew that SDSU
even HAD a football team!

I think there are people in this world who look for reasons to be
offended. And, as we all know, if you look for something hard enough
and long enough, you'll probably find it.

Happy Whatever,
Julie
