The NCAA has NO BUSINESS (I mean NO BUSINESS) taking a political
correctness stand on the nicknames and mascots of colleges and
universities. If I were the President of a university that the NCAA was
pressuring to change mascot and nickname (that frequently has historic
roots to that region and its people); I would tell the NCAA to kiss my
grits and demand they thank me for the opportunity to do so! They are
sticking their nose in where it does not belong.

For those on this listserv who do not live in the United States, the
NCAA is the national collegiate athletic association. They regulate
intercollegiate SPORTS eligibility rules, etc. for the athletic teams of
the member schools; football, basketball, baseball, softball, wrestling,
track & field, lacrosse, swimming & diving, soccer, etc. Not all
universities and colleges are members of the NCAA; some are members of
the NAIA.

I am not from North Dakota. Nevertheless, I defend their right to keep
their mascot as the Fighting Sue!

Best regards, Steve

While we are on the subject of political correctness maybe one of the
more enlightened in this esteemed crowd can explain the following to
me:

The University of North Dakota adopted the name of the "Fighting
Sioux"
in honor of the Sioux Nation which was publicly acknowledged by many
in
the military (domestic and foreign) as the finest light cavalry in the
world. The president of the college was adopted by the local Sioux
tribe for bestowing such an honor on them.

On the other hand, the University of Norte Dame is known by the name
"The Fighting Irish". Fighting Irish is a throwback from the potato
famine migration of the 1850's when the Irish when generally thought
to
be made up of 25% thugs, 25% policeman, and 50% railroad laborers,
100%
of which were always spoiling for a fight.

Now, here are my questions:

1. Which of the names is more politically incorrect?

2. Which of the two names was more derogatory in its origins?

3. The NCAA is requiring which institution to change its name?

4. Does the logical answer mean that the NCAA is racist against the
Irish?

Political correctness has just about as much to do with reason as IT
has
to do with records.

Based on that, this evening I am going to celebrate Canada Day and the
4th of July with a large Oriental salad topped with French dressing
and
washed down by a black Russian.

Merry Christmas to all.

BTW: I am MN native and UMD Bulldog at heart.
