Our "Enterprise Document and Records Management" has evolved to be
something independent of a single software solution. While we have some
favored products as Corporate standards, our goal really is to provide the
guidelines which systems must conform to be compliant to our records
management policies. This has lead more to discussion with our IT folks to
ensure that our system architecture can support such things as long term
preservation, migration, authentication. We are also looking at ways to
imbed RM into automated business processes, so the inputs and outputs are
captured without user intervention. Mind you this is still more vision than
implementation, but the closer we look at this the more sensible it seems
and the tools are becoming available to make it happen.

Not all records are created equal, some are fine stored on a local hard
drive (the usual back-ups and controls to be sure), other records require
the robust tools of a full on EDMRM system, heck some of the records we
deal with are fine to just stick in a box and store till their retentions
run out.

I have to say though, I'm watching with interest the development and
deployment of Microsoft's Office 2007 - I think that suite of products may
well define enterprise document and records management in the coming years.
