<By the way, another reason to dislike boxing up hanging folders: those
puppies are heavy.>

I have been told enumerable times, by those who are enamored of hanging
files, that the advantage in using them is how much one hanging file can
hold. They could put "lots" of documents in one file compared to manila
folders. I've always noticed, however, that those who like to stuff the
hanging files were never the same folks that had to pull the files out
of a drawer to box for storage. They never experienced the joy of
"droopy" hanging file syndrome that occurs when one attempts to remove
an overstuffed file from a file drawer and the contents slide out in
forty different directions. They never had the pleasure of torn
clothing (and often torn skin) from rapier sharp metal edges. They
never enjoyed that sinking sensation when plastic label holders pop off
halfway to the box, but are not noticed until all files had been boxed.

Hanging files do have some advantages over filing manila folders - ease
of file movement within the drawer, better visibility of the folders,
easier to move multiple folders when expanding a file category, etc. I
agree with those who recommend considering the hanging files as part of
the equipment and place documents in manila folders, and the manila
folders in the hanging files. One still gets the advantages of the
hanging files, without all the disadvantages (just some of them).
