Nothing to be sorry for. Different retentions depending on public and private sectors, and each state may have a
different requirement. We have 50 states, and each could have a different requirement.

It just shows there may many correct answers to the question being asked.

I should have been more specific. I was quoting from the State General
Schedule which is different from the State Local Government schedule...
Sorry!

Unfortunately in the State of Washington you may have a requirement to
retain the time cards for a longer period. The General Records
Retention Schedule for All Local Government Agencies in Washington State
have the following requirement.

..........................

Item 112 - Disposition Authority Number: GS50-03E-04

Time Cards/Time Sheets
Daily, Weekly or Monthly time accumulation reports. May be used as
retirement verification.

If used for retirement verification - 60 years

If not used for retirement verification - 3 years (plus of course the
Federal Requirement).

They must be retained for 60 years if employee pay histories or payroll
registers are not used for verification.

........................

So if you don't have the pay histories or payroll registers you got to
keep the time cards/time sheets for retirement verification.

I work for Washington State, and our General Schedule says:

Attendance and Leave Records
A record of the attendance of state employees including annual leave,
sick leave, compensatory time, exchange time, overtime, personal
holidays, and other records pertaining to attendance. (series revised
2005)

Cut off - End of Fiscal Year

Retention period of official copy - 6 years

Not archival

Hope that helps!
