Hello,
The RM component of SharePoint 2007 is a "light" version of an RMA. It is focused on electonic documents within Office System (stored in SharePoint). The recommended RMA for Microsoft Office System seems to continue to be Meridio. IMHO, Microsoft is at least one further release away from a full scale RMA. We are using both Meridio and SharePoint here at CDIC. I am aware of a couple of other large government organizations in Canada using the same solution.

Subject: [RM] Microsoft SharePoint RM Plans
I haven't seen much chatter about Microsoft's Records Management plans for SharePoint 2007 on this list and I've been surprised that some colleagues I've spoken to didn't even know Microsoft is getting into the game. So I thought I'd post a couple of good links for anyone interested in learning more.
This is from Microsoft's Technet site: http://technet2.microsoft.com/Office/en-us/library/884c0583-07e0-4e59-bd0c-dfe2b8229aed1033.mspx?mfr=true. It contains some interesting articles written (thankfully) for non-techies detailing their approach to records management using SharePoint 2007. Worth reading.
And this is the Microsoft Records Management blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/recman/archive/2006/08/17/704520.aspx. This site has been posted here before, but if you haven't seen it, it's definitely worth checking out.
Just a disclaimer: I don't work for Microsoft. I just believe this information might be helpful if your organization is planning to pursue an RM (or even ECM) solution anytime soon. Especially if you're already a Microsoft shop.
Cheers,
