I am not certain the term Taxonomy is appropriate to what we do in a Records
Management environment. It is my personal opinion that what we have [or at
least should have] is a Business Classification Scheme - BCS which is based
on the Business Processes of our organisation/s.

 

The BCS is made up from a listing of our operational terminology in the
guise of a Controlled Vocabulary - CV specific to our needs and documented
with Scope Notes and definitions.

 

A Records Management environment is more than the above but in my personal
view if a CV is not documented to the enth degree and that a BCS is not
documented, approved and circulated for all and I mean ALL of an
organisation then we are building an RM or EDMS on shifting sands which will
sink in the quagmire of mediocrity.

 

A BCS can be the foundation of a Retention Schedule and again in my opinion
if we have a Retention Schedule that is not based on a BCS and thus the
business process of the organisation then we have a less process than could
be if we linked the two and with much inefficiency and waste of time &
money.
