In your first two sentences you are essentiall describing an imaging
system; which can house and manage imaged (from hated paper) documents,
as well as source native electronic documents. An EDMS system has a lot
of capabilities for electronic docs; check in/check out; collaborative
review and update, etc. An EDMS can also house imaged documents.
Either can be tied to retention policy systems, tables & capabilities.

Best regards, Steve

Hi, all,
I may have been laboring under a misapprehension. Doesn't document
management software manage only images, not born-electronic documents?
And
usually does not have a retention component?

And don't you need a repository-type system or a system for including
retention information in the metadata of born-electronic documents?

Thanks,
