I've seen lists from other employment sources; they all leave us out.  I
suspect we probably wouldn't make the top 5,000 if such a list was
published.  Yet, I am not surprised, even though I see high demand for
record managers in the future as companies begin to get their hands around
the 600 pound information gorilla.  Add to that the continued pace of
litigation (in the U.S. anyway) there will always be a market (albeit a
niche one) for us.

Lets face it, many companies (let alone individuals), know little about us
or understand what we do.  I still come across executives who still
associate us with file rooms (i.e. paper).  Takes me a while to convince
them we offer way more than that.  We are pretty good about selling our
expertise to ourselves, but we've done a poor job (IMHO) of marketing to the
outside.

Besides, how many of us aspired to be a records manager?  My dream in
college was to oversee a large distribution facility (my undergraduate
degree was in Operations Management); records management wasn't even on
the radar.   Now I'm neck deep into it.  No formal education program exists,
such as accounting, marketing, etc., for one to become a records manager.
Most of us have "fallen" into the profession.  I received my training
through the military.

Oh well, some musings on a gray day in H-town...
