Listserv lurkers and professional responders here is another jolt for
your Records Management system in the form of a question.

Several records management initiatives are in place in your organization
that your either put there are have worked very hard to get the embers
burning:

There are

1.	Some records management policies and procedures in place but the
are not well known
2.	A few inventories exist -but you're not sure how good they are
or if they are still relevant but you have them never the less.
3.	Some improvements have been made to off-site storage of paper
records (yes you still have them) record keepers are getting use to the
idea of using the automated system provided by the vendor. But you got a
long way to go on this subject.
4.	No destruction processes in place nothing has been destroyed for
many years (say since 1992). Oh we were all so much older then.
5.	Some efforts underway to provide Records Management Training,
you have some stuff to train with and when you schedule training people
actually show up and no one yells get the hook. (an old vaudeville
saying to get actors or comedians off the stage)

After pushing the records management bolder here and their and just when
you were about to expire you heard from the Wizard of OZ "Hay you their,
yes you "Records Manager" I grant you permission to hire a couple of
professional records managers to help improve your efforts to date. Now
get one with it!"

What would you do first second third and so forth?

Thought such a question would warm many of our frozen cockles. (Not
quite sure what cockles are but as cold as it has been if I got em their
frozen)

My list is as follows.

1.	Establish a Records Management Web site for the organization and
fill it with exciting information about what Records Management is what
it can do and why you need everyone cooperation and support to move it
forward.
2.	Records Management Steering Committee formed: as and oversight
and decision making team that is represented by major business unit
representation.
3.	Updating and improve awareness of RM policies and procedures.
4.	Records inventories: updated to current status and file plan
developed.
5.	Continue improving inactive record keeping practices: thru
automation, policy and procedure, training, and monitoring use.
6.	Develop Record Retention Schedules: develop single record
retention schedule to provide structure and procedural guidance for the
systematic retirement and disposition of company records.
7.	Continue with Records Management Training: Develop multi-tiered
training venues for various groups with in the organization
8.	Management and Culture: The organization makes RM a subject for
management attention and planning.
9.	Develop a communications plan
10.	Celebrate and retire ( Just kidding)
