I use the system from the vendor because that's what my company
provided. It would do the job if all I was doing was tracking boxes that
were full of similar records (all AP Invoices or all Lot Files).
However, we have other records that are not so simple requiring more
detail and that is where the vendor's system comes up short. It is very
difficult to try to fit our data needs (the square peg) into the
predetermined and only slightly modifiable database fields the vendor's
program provides (the round hole). Also, there are some things it just
doesn't do well -- litigation holds, for one. In addition, whenever
there is a problem with the program, the process to get it addressed can
be very slow -- we're only one of many customers.

If I had my druthers, I'd have an in-house RM package. Because I have
been told that this is unlikely to be approved, I will be looking very
closely and trying out the Microsoft RIM functionally in Server and
Office 2007.

Some companies use a electronic tracking system (RM software/ database/
etc) to tracking their inactive records. Others input all that data
into
the tracking system provided by their offsite storage provider.

Which do you use and why?
