the messages may be saved elsewhere in people's private "archives" but
this is a piece-meal situation. It is like trying to reconstruct an
entire conversation from different repositories. you will never be
able to completely reconstruct a listserv thread. something will
always be missing from it.

I have copies of my RAIN postings, but what I do not have are any
commentaries posted about them made by others. Even if these
conversations were saved elsewhere how are we to find them?
