Last year I had the "pleasure" of participating on a similar panel
that SNIA put together as part of their San Diego conference. What I
found interesting then was that most of the questions were directed to
us (Paula Johnson was the other RIM panelist); the storage folks are
really struggling with how to effectively store and manage
information. The vendors that sold them the ILM concept (along with
the storage devices and software) have made it sound simple to
implement. What the they are finding out is (the hard way) is that
it's not quite straight forward as they are being lead to believe.

This is an excellent opportunity for us as records managers to market
what we as a profession can bring to the table within our
organization. If you don't have a relationship with you IT
department, send this article to your IT manager (or CIO) as a way of
introducing yourself and offer to help find a solution (or solutions).

John Montana spoke today at the ARMA Houston's Conference, which as
usual, was great and worth the admission price. A couple of the many
points he made stick clearly in my simple mind; we as records managers
need to become risk takers. We must be willing not only to speak up
and but talk the talk and walk the walk by be problem solvers. This
is our chance to do both.
