Kathleen M Hallahan wrote, "I'm actually not a records manager at all, but
an IT storage professional with primary responsibility for our backup
environment....backups are not records. They may include copies of records
as well as non-records, but are not the primary repository. The purpose of
a backup is to enable an organization to recover data in the event of loss.
While there may be instances (such as a litigation hold) where backup data
must be retained in some format, that is independent of the data's
classification as a record."

"As a side note, "backup tapes" are really media, and it is the content
which is significant."

Let's see - Jesse and Kathleen...two understand. How many more IS people
to go?

Later, she asked, "Ah, here's where I think I was missing something. I was
viewing the retention schedule as a classification of the "what" and "how
long" of records, with corporate policy and process implementation driving
the "where" and "how." Is this simply a different approach or am I
actually incorrect?"

I don't think you are incorrect, just that the records of the "where" and
"how" usually wind up with or are tracked by Records Management.
