We have a similar system to that described by Peter. I don't have a company-issued computer, but all I can access from home is email (can't open attachments from home), the company intranet, and the payroll system (to approve time cards). Interestingly, our IT department has been given the task of figuring out ways to allow employees to work from home in the event of a pandemic as part of our bird flu planning.  I'm pretty sure that there will be no large scale distribution of computers, but I will let you know what comes out of this planning effort.
