And after all, why not pay an additional fee to track your assets when you
can't trust your contracted service provider to do a decent job at it?

Seeing as they aren't ever held publicly responsible when it happens and you
have to pay the cost to notify all of the affected clients, along with
offering years of free credit checks, and suffer the damage to your
reputation for something you weren't responsible for, this might be a cheap
out.

Then again, you COULD negotiate stronger contracts and REFUSE to agree to
"hold harmless" clauses, and then drub your service provider in the press
just like what happens to you...
