In regards to the suggestion that this can be circumvented by purchasing your own domain for between $50-$100/year... If you are unemployed, most likely you are watching closely how much money you spend, and $50-$100 may all of a sudden look like a lot of money.

I also think the vendors are shooting themselves in the foot when they restrict access based upon email domains. Students and those who are unemployed are most likely trying to learn or keep up with the RM trends for when they interview for their next position. I am sure a good number of those people, once they are employed RMs, will remember how that vendor treated them.

I also agree with the person who said most people who are interested in white papers are in the information-gathering stages of determining if a project is feasible at their organization, and that those who are at the decision-making stage have already done their research.

The problem I run into is many times I don't know how helpful a whitepaper will be until I skim/read it, and that can't happen until I fill out all that contact information. Things move very, very slowly in the organization where I work, and I can hear the frustration in the vendor's voice when I say it may be 5 years before we can implement whatever the whitepaper is about.

I can understand that vendors think that those who access their whitepapers are good candidates for purchasing their product/services. I do hope the vendors on this listserv take the commments that have been posted in the manner that they are offered - as advice for how best to interact with potential customers.

Best wishes to all,
Bridg8
(keeping off my company's email to protect the innocent) ;)
