As an alternative to weekly reports, I've once been in a situation where
my supervisor and I shared a private wiki that allowed us to build upon
conversations. Both of us had different schedules going on, so it was a
nice way to "touch base" with each other without having to fret too much
about finding time to speak face-to-face. I was involved with several
projects, so the wiki was set up with a page for each project, as well
as a page for general questions/problems. As a plus, it gave me
something to refer back to without having to hassle my supervisor with
"now what did you say about X again?"
Not a complete substitute for actual conversations, but I found it to be
a great way of communicating progress as well as challenges.
