It is important to understand that in the U.S. there is a difference between electronic record keeping and an electronic copy of hard copy records.  Frequently questions are asked can you destroy hard copy after imaging.  The same rules that allow you to rely upon electronic record keeping do not necessarily allow you to rely on an electronic copy of hard copy documents.  This is very much dependent on the rules established by various regulators. In my view, such questions need to be reviewed by competent counsel (especially if you are in a highly regulated industry).
