Interesting info on how the camera in your phone can cause problems for you !

Much of this may not be news to some of you, but if it is… it can be an eye
opener.

The attached PDF (PDF Posted in the RIM_Resources Yahoo Group) is of a US
Army briefing regarding potential risks associated with “Geotagging”, a
feature that exists with many ‘social applications” such as Facebook,
Urbanspoon, Google, iHeartRadio, Safari, Twitter, Foursquare and others.
Lots of people *WANT* to use this feature with some applications to
broadcast to others where they are, and that’s completely up to them to
decide but many are unaware these features are turned on in their smart
phones and other ‘touch’ devices.

One specific function that uses this is the camera in almost ALL smart
phones. It tags a location into the metadata on your phone and when others
view the photo a right-click on the photo and second click on “View Info”
can provide very definitive information about where the shot was taken.
This feature may have some benefits for you personally if in the future
you’d like to go back and recall where you took a picture, but if your
privacy settings aren’t locked down on social apps… it’s not just you that
can get this info. Keep in mind, people can construct where you are and
where you’ve been and some people with too much time on their hands can use
this information for the wrong purposes.

Can’t speak to how this works on other phones, but ion the iPhone, go into
“settings”, then “General” then “Location Services” and you can either turn
them off GLOBALLY, or you can turn them off application by application.
Likely you’ll want to leave them on for Search, Maps, Compass, Alarm Clock
and maybe a few others.

And if you’re a TOTAL SOCIAL ANIMAL, well, you’ll want to leave it on for
Facebook etc, but you may want to go into Facebook, check your privacy
settings and make sure you are allowing either “Friends Only” access to
certain features, or “Friends of Friends” if you feel comfortable with that…
but don’t forget that friends of those friends can also see lots of things =)

If you’d like some additional information, you may want to peruse this site
as well http://bit.ly/glue07 This was posted in October of 2010, but
seeing as they’ve extended the copyright date to 2011, it seems they’ve
re-validated all the links and content.
