Another definition of "legacy data" from an IT perspective is "data that
has not been accessed for x number of years". This relates somewhat to the
ILM view of data management. For years, such data was routinely destroyed,
unfortunately with occasional and significant consequences - particularly
in terms of the kind of long term retention data Larry mentioned, that may
lay unused for years, then suddenly become a vital resource. Where we have
particularly encountered this issue is in the backlog conversion of
historic records, in which the original indexing data accompanying those
records was deleted, now requiring expensive reconstruction of the data as
the records are converted to electronic formats.
