Hi there,
We built an in-house database used to manage our box and file storage
for the City of Surrey. It has hundreds of thousands of records. Our
database began as a Wang system and was migrated, we now use Oracle
Application Express (APEX).
When I worked in archives, we used the InMagic DBTextworks system and
had several thousand files. It is closer to a flat file system than a
relational database but you can still create hierarchies.
We did some self-development and more complex work was done by Andornot
Consulting in Vancouver, BC. Not sure if you need a VAR, but they are a
great vendor to deal with, I miss working with them!
Regards,
Lois Enns

Subject: Flat File Structures
Hello List Serve,
I am wondering if there is ever a time when managing records that a
flat file structure is a good thing? I really find that relational
databases to be advantageous for a large set of records but I would like
input from you all. Also, is there any reason in a flat file structure
that you would limit the amount of metadata?
Much thanks,
adh
