Interesting discussion. I'm not sure if this applies to your situation, but one 
thing I've noticed about older mainframe (and minicomputer) data over the 
years is how often there is little or no documentation about the internal 
formats of the files. 



Documents like Word, WordPerfect, Wang WP, etc. have a standard 
organization, but mainframe programmers, especially in the older times 
were constantly creating one of a kind applications and file formats, often 
with little in the way of description.
