What is Information Governance?
What will be the role of the Records Manager in the21st century? The answer has implications beyond those in the profession, as every large organization is struggling to manage not just its records but its information. This is not simply the challenge of information volume and variety, for which bigger content management systems might be seen as a naive solution. This is an organizational challenge, where different stakeholders have competing interests and their responsibilities are ill defined.

Information Governance is the response to this challenge. It promotes a holistic approach to enterprise information management, involving multiple departments and disciplines to address issues ranging from information access to data quality to compliance. And by unifying these issues, it promises to elevate them to strategic importance within an organization. To successfully implement Information Governance within an organization depends on two things. First, it requires the organizational will and political savvy to establish and sustain an Information Governance program. Second, it requires a disciplined approach to the organization's information, one informed by an understanding of legal issues, risks, and approaches to classifications and rules. In short, it requires the very skills Records Managers use every day.

This presentation will discuss:
*	The information management challenges faced by today's large organizations.
*	What Information Governance is and how it addresses the information challenges.
*	Challenges to establishing Information Governance in an organization.
*	Opportunities for Records Managers within Information Governance.

What Does Information Really Cost, and How Do We Value It?
The information environment is changing. Data volumes are growing, but unstructured information is growing faster than our ability to manage it. This creates enormous complexity and risk, while making it difficult for organizations to generate real value from it all. Despite this looming crisis, most organization have limited ability to quantify the real cost of owning and managing unstructured information. Determining the total cost of owning unstructured information is an essential precursor to managing and monetizing that information.

Establishing Information Governance at Your Organization.
Many companies realize they have an Information Governance problem, but are not sure how to get started. This session will discuss how to develop Information Governance programs, obtain the required funding, and include the right people from your organization.

Case Studies in Information Governance.
Several real world examples of Information Governance projects will be discussed, including defensibly disposing of hard copy and electronic documents, even in the face of litigation holds; using technology to organize documents into records classes; developing records retention (and deletion) polices that actually work; and transforming RIM professionals into Information Governance professionals.
