Mr. Lueders, thank you for adding perspective to the arguments regarding this article. However, I disagree that RIM is or should become IG. As a professor and speaker, I teach that each has its own definition and role. Imagine two circles that overlap and have common area. This, I believe, represents the nexus of RIM and IG. IG certainly contains areas that are outside of RIM, but it cannot exist without tenets of RIM. Likewise, the explosion and evolution of information is presenting ever-growing challenges of pristine identification as to whether something is by definition a record. And IG is a critical element of RIM in many organizations today, yet there are elements of IG that go beyond the accepted bounds of RIM.

These same issues are areas in which I struggle as a practitioner. We are like most others, trying to stay abreast of the challenges, much less get in front. Application of the theories and philosophies in the real world is an exciting and challenging endeavor!

I don't know if you or anyone else wants to call me an "expert". I have been in the profession since 1992, earned my CRM and IGP along the way, and tried my best to listen to people I respect. And it is this experience that has led me to believe there is validity to IG, a separate and meaningful place for RIM, and a need to be knowledgeable in both areas to properly serve the interests of an employer. In the end, I sure don't feel as if I am arguing with your position, only clarifying that RIM and IG are both vital and unique disciplines working to achieve many, but not all, of the same goals.
