I agree with everyone who says physical objects can be records. However if 
your specifications for each product provide all of the information your 
company needs to defend itself, I would suggest you keep the spec sheets 
in lieu of the samples. They take up less space and are easier to manage.

If you must keep the physical objects, keep only one sample of each lot # 
or model # as the case may be.

Retention would be set by the liability statutes of limitations in the 
states in which you sell products. Don't forget contractual 
considerations.
