In 8th grade, our 'computer science' class involved writing a BASIC program with do loops, then traveling to central admin to hand type the punch cards which (if they didn't get out of order) would produce a one-line error message on a sheet of greenbar, or eventually would calculate a list of numbers or even print a picture composed of lines of characters. College papers were all typed with a Smith Corona electric (it was portable) using white out fluid or white correction sheets.

One great IBM invention for the Selectric was to incorporate a correcting key that would remember the last keys typed and white them out as many times as you pressed the error key...my first experience with what would become the backspace/delete key. Disclosure: I'm 57.

While at UC Berkeley in 1992, they were having a big sale for employees, they were selling really nice microscopes in a box and selectric typewriters with extra balls, each for about $50. I still have one of each. Which was the better investment?

In 1984, I got an IBM PC Jr. with a tractor feed, daisy wheel printer.
It was the second edition "Jr.", with a real keyboard instead of the original with Chiclet keys. It came with a color monitor, which convinced me to go Big Blue instead of the monochrome Apple. As others have mentioned, it had dual 5.25" floppy drives, one for app software and one for data. I was the "first on my block" to ditch the typewriter.
