I hate the use of current year + x.
a better phrasing would be Retain for 1 year after the end of the year.
retention is calculated from the youngest record. and yes it does mean that
some records will be kept for more than 1 year. one needs to make the
decision on doing an annual purge or a monthly purge.

current year + x phrasing goes back to the days of filing cabinets and the
amount of space available. The records to be kept in the cabinet were the
current year and x previous years where x = 1, 2, 3 etc.
