During my residency here, I have been exploring ways in which the
university can get a better handle on its faculty-produced research data.
The project has been illuminating. The first thing I discovered is that
Tufts is not alone in their uncertainty concerning the status of
institutionally connected research data. Many institutions are taking a
hard look at how they approach research data management and some of the
results are noteworthy. Harvard, for instance, has developed the Dataverse
Network; an “open-source application for sharing, citing, analyzing and
preserving research data. <http://thedata.org/>” Purdue has recently
developed an online research repository (PURR), which provides researchers
with a collaborative space during their project and long-term data
management assistance. (Published datasets remain online for a minimum of
10 years as a part of the Purdue Libraries’ collection
<https://purr.purdue.edu/about>.)

"The problems of our economy have occurred not as an outgrowth of
laissez-faire, unbridled competition.
They have occurred under the guidance of federal agencies, and under the
umbrella of federal regulations."
Senator Ted Kennedy, in defending trucking deregulation in 1978.
