I  am with the group on this one, the current retention period is what is used to determine whether materials are eligible for disposal.  I have never put it policy as our policy always refers to the current retention period.  

If a company is using a process like Gary describes, I have a question for the organization?  What do you do if the retention period is reduced?  If the practice was to use the originally assigned retention timeframe, I know a lot of utility companies that would be retaining materials for decades longer than the current requirements.
