A well thought out article, with some good "meaty" content... but a bit of
a myopic viewpoint.

"The most elegant solution would be a singular environment where all
unstructured content is handled centrally: where enterprise-wide policies
for retention can be programmed and executed consistently and where no
duplicate copies linger in the shadows. "

Not all environments are simple enough to lend themselves to having their
content managed in an auto-classification World. BUT, where the author is
correct is here...

"The exact configuration and division of roles between man and machine will
depend on a specific organization’s needs. For now, it is generally agreed
that records professionals are best left to do what they do best: assigning
policies for complicated or ambiguous items. Auto-classification can then
be left to filter out the easily identifiable items such as those with
specific URLs, items with certain metadata or items created by predefined
key individuals."

I think we can all (well, most, who are doing this in the real World, and
in the trenches) agree there is a need for human intervention to assist
with developing the policies and procedures to establish systems to get the
information assets moving in the right direction/s and as the author says,

"...since every piece of data in the organization must be “touched” at some
point, a blend of automatic and manual classification is currently the only
feasible approach."
