A recent Stanford study found that many college history majors struggle to
assess evidence about past events. I looked at that in a new blog post
about appraisal, in the context of analyzing records for research value in
the context of their creation.

These are complicated issues, especially since the classroom is just one
source of information and knowledge about past events. There are many
other elements that affect assessment of written and oral evidence. And
even reputable academic historians sometimes disagree about
interpretations, although they share common research methodologies. Because
records play an important role in assessing what happened, how, and why,
the work you do as RMs is an important part of historical and civic
literacy. RIM Month a good time to say thank you for your efforts; as my
post shows, your appraisal work is directly linked to historical appraisal
efforts. I was reminded of that last week, when I helped staff the
District of Columbia National History Day competition, held April 11-12,
2018 at the National Archives.
