Well, this one would be effective and cheap =)

Typically, they are degaussed... especially if you have any desire to
re-use them.  In extreme situations, they are shredded...in industrial
shredders....seriously.

With the price dropping substantially on hard drives, more companies are
removing and destroying them from systems when replacing them now...
especially with he concerns related to privacy issues.
